I. The Road to Personal Revival Thank God for my Associate My Associate Lois Dietrich began to read books of the Revivalists of the past as a result of an intense hunger for more of God in her heart and life. She would say to me, “Holly I don’t see these things happening in our ministry. I used to tell her “Stop reading so much we are busy in our ministry and things are different today. Times have changed. Little did I know that I would be changing my attitude about that.
We were traveling and in Florida when Lois suggested we visit the Brownsville Revival. I hesitantly agreed to go. It wasn’t that I was in opposition to it but I guess I was just tired of being in church as I knew it.
The Day I will Never Forget The Day had arrived when we would visit the Brownsville Revival. I remember driving down Cervantes St. and both Lois and I began to weep as we saw the line of people waiting to get into the church. Immediately I repented of my attitude and asked God to forgive me for pride. At that moment the intense hunger that Lois had also got hold of me. We both knew that God had something for us at the Brownsville Revival.
That night when the worship began I felt the presence of God in a way I had never sensed Him before in my life. I felt wonderful but I also felt very convicted of “having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof.
The Process of Revival and Renewal began The power of God was so strong and I sensed God’s holy presence in a very awesome way that my stomach even quivered under the touch of God’s Spirit. This was the beginning on the road of repentance which continued all the way to our home in NJ. Lois would weep every time she would hear worship music or read the Word. I would continue to feel a profound sense of God’s holiness and the depth of the degree of my need for more of God became stronger and stronger. We were planning when we would return to Brownsville even before we reached our home. We knew that this was the beginning of some big changes in both of our lives personally and in our ministry.
Our first 8-10 trips to Brownsville caused us to be liberated from all those layers of religion, self and the world that had settled on us. I have been in the ministry for 29 yrs. so that was quite a few layers. Every time I thought I was down to the to the last layer God would point at something else in our lives to refine.
The Big Cleanup When God does housecleaning He doesn’t leave any room untouched and with the power that is flowing at Brownsville we were put under a real overhaul by the Spirit of God. We talk about doing a Spring cleaning; well this was Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer too. But when I heard the testimonies of what had happened in other leaders and ministers’ lives I began to have hope that one day I too would have a testimony of God’s power working dramatically and completely in my life.
These are the areas God changed in our lives; Holiness—when Steve Hill said we as ministers could go to hell even if we held credentials with the A/G or with baptismal waters dripping off us or even if we had a history of good works, well that shook us up. The Holy Spirit begin to examine every area of our lives. In every service we felt the penetrating power of the Holy Spirit cleaning up many areas of our lives. Through Steve’s convicting messages on sin and Bro. Kilpatrick’s teachings on Leprosy on Your House and other messages we saw the Holy Spirit began to teach us a new level of personal holiness and consecration. God dealt with such areas as: integrity, attitudes, self-discipline, money management. God was laying a foundation and preparing us for an even deeper work.
An Even Deeper Work—As we continued to return to the revival God continued purging and purifying us. We have been to the Revival now 14 times since May 1997. We knew we had to soak in this environment even at home and so we invested in at least 20 videos each time we came. Bro. Kilpatrick’s messages on the Kingdom of God and the Holy Spirit and others dealing with not offending the Holy Spirit have caused us to make our home a place where the Holy Spirit is comfortable. Now thank God people come in our home and say they feel an anointing and the presence of God is evident. We are distributing videos of the Brownsville Revival as we travel now in our ministry with a desire to see a hunger awakened in the pastors where we go to preach.
Deeper Yet—As God was cleaning us up from the inside out we knew He wanted more from us. In several of our visits to the Revival God convicted us of spiritual laziness and lack of paying the price to have the ministry that He intended for us. That meant spiritual discipline was needed. God changed our prayer life. Before revival prayer was very routine and methodical and now it is our life line and our source of power waiting on God. Being in the Brownsville Revival and being operated on by the Spirit of God not once but many times brought about miraculous changes.
